Incident Investigation Training

Is there a difference between an “accident” and an “incident”? Yes, and this training will increase your awareness of what an “Incident” is and the valuable information that is acquired from a proper Incident Investigation and Incident Investigation Report.

In the past, undesirable events were labelled as accidents. Two problems resulted from this label. The first is that we commonly assume that accidents just “happen” and that not all can be prevented. The second is the assumption that if no harm or loss resulted, the event was not serious. This is a false assumption as an element of luck may have been involved in the avoidance of a serious outcome. In some cases en event labeled as a near miss was not investigated or included in safety reporting.

Incident Investigation training is included as a module of the Safe Person in a Safe Place: safety orientation training course.

The term “Incident” is now being used in place of Accident. An Incident is defined as an undesired event which, under different circumstances, resulted in or could have resulted in harm to people, damage to property or equipment or processes or production. This inclusion of what has been referred to as near misses creates a broader definition of an Incident. Incident Investigation is essential to determining the reasons for incidents and working to increase safety and health in the workplace.

The new “Safe Person in a Safe Place: safety orientation” course is a great combination of 5 of the core learning pieces required by Supervisors and Managers.
