Supervisor and Manager Safety Training
A good starting point for training Supervisors and Managers is a broad Safety Orientation. One of the foundations of safety is the concept of a “workplace hazard”. Where there are no hazards, no risk of illness or injury, workplaces would be free if injury or ill health. The reality is, most workplaces have hazards and as situations change new hazards are being introduced to the workplace all the time.
In addition to understanding what Hazards are, and the types of hazards supervisors and managers need to be aware of how to inspect a workplace to check for existence of hazards and to know what can be done to eliminate or control hazards. Workspace inspections can be a leading indicator, used to create a more proactive health and safety program in your workplace. Basics include understanding the steps in a workplace inspection, types of workplace inspection, a checklist for completing a workplace inspection, writing a workplace inspection report, and how to handle situations which require corrective action.
As a Supervisor or Manager, this leadership role carries with it additional responsibilities. This may include the need to participate in “Incident Investigations”. In the past the term “accident” was used for an unplanned or unwanted event that resulted in injury or illness; and many were of the opinion that accidents just happened and in some cases were accepted as part of the job.
Current safety and health programs use the term “Incident” in place of Accident. An Incident is defined as an undesired event which, under different circumstances, resulted in or could have resulted in harm to people, damage to property or equipment or processes or production. This inclusion of what has been referred to as near misses creates a broader definition of an Incident. Incident Investigation is essential to determining the reasons for incidents and working to increase safety and health in the workplace.
